Booths and beer go together like a pie and a pint. This month we’re throwing our very first Beer and Cider Festival. With tasting events, guest ales and even our very own specially-brewed beer, the Festival will celebrate the excellent brewing being done in our four counties, as well as fine beers and cider from further afield.

Running from April 24th to May 21st , the Festival will allow our customers the opportunity to discover more beers than ever before. During Festival month we’re welcoming 15 guest ales and ciders to our extensive existing range. We’re also hosting tasting sessions with local brewers every Friday and Saturday, so that you can try samples of their carefully-made bitter, golden ale, mild or stout, and find out more about how and where they brew.

Whether you shop with us in Lancashire, Cumbria, Yorkshire or Cheshire, you’ll see beers from your area highlighted in store. The wealth of breweries in the North, from high-quality regional beer hubs like the Lancaster Brewery to Cheshire’s comparatively tiny Tatton Brewery, means that we’re never short of a local pint.

Craft ciders and Continental beers are also well represented; our buyer John Gill has chosen these carefully, bringing old-fashioned West Country ciders and crisp, complex wheat beers to the Festival. Detailed tasting notes will help you to find a new favourite, and we’ve thought about food matching, too: look out for ideas for pairing different styles of beer and cider with the perfect meat, fish or cheese from our specialist counters.

As well as celebrating the many beers that are already being brewed, we thought we’d try our hand at making a new one. Our Festival Ale, made for us at Hawkshead Brewery, is a limited edition brew of only 6,400 bottles, each individually numbered. Made with a blend of modern American and traditional English hops, it’s a refreshing 4% ABV pale ale with a tropical fruit aroma, grapefruit, lemon zest and orange flavours and a pithy, bitter finish. It’ll only be available for a limited time, so try it while you can – and we hope it won’t be the only new drink you discover during our Beer and Cider Festival.

Here at Booths, we work closely with our suppliers to ensure their fishing methods restore and maintain a healthy marine environment bringing you the highest quality seafood to your plate.

One such company who share our values is The Ethical Shellfish Company. Working on small vessels based on the Isle of Mull, owner Guy Grieve puts these ethics firmly at the heart of his family business. “We base all our fishing methods on one principle…. respect for the Ocean. Each of our King Scallops are lifted from the sea bed of the Inner Hebrides by hand, any that are too small are reseeded with care to ensure they live on. There is no waste or by-catch, meaning you can enjoy your meal, safe in the knowledge, that you are not only eating one of the world’s finest delicacies but helping protect our seas.”

NEW BOOTHS PROSECCO

(Venezie,Italy)

Prosecco is the grape and its only home is in north eastern Italy, this cracking wine is made from hand-harvested grapes, grown in quality driven vineyards. Together these elements achieve the ultimate sparkling wine requirement of a balance between aromatics, flavour and a refreshing zesty structure.

Sparkling wines provide us with the perfect apéritif, or a great wine to have before your tea! Packed with flavour including baked apple, a touch of biscuit and just a hint of cream. If you’re having a party this wine will match with a range of canapés and nibbles.

£7.99 75cl

NEW BOOTHS GAVI DEL COMUNE DI GAVI

(Piedmont, Italy)

If you like Pinot Grigio you’ll love this! A long standing favourite with the rich and famous on the Italian Riviera, which is just down the road from the town of Gavi – produced from a tiny little pocket of Cortese grapes grown in perfect conditions, then hand-harvested to produce something very special.

A beautifully enticing nose of white peach, pear and blossoms which lead us nicely on to the palate with hints of gooseberry and a squeeze of fresh lime. Great on its own and because of the texture and full-flavoured finish, try it with our lunchtime recipe of Fresh Salmon Burgers with Lemon, Caper and Dill Mayonnaise.

£9.99 75cl

NEW BOOTHS PINOT GRIGIO

(Venezie, Italy)

Sourced from the classic Pinot area of north eastern Italy, mature vineyards combine hand-harvested grapes to give us a sublimely smooth and surprisingly complex (in a good way, not maths homework) wine! Produced by one of Italy’s top co-operatives with over 200 members, all targeted with producing the best wine they can.

Beautifully fruity, exceedingly refreshing and extremely easy drinking (maybe a little too easy…), this is a really good food wine but it does equally well with friends! Next time you’re having poultry try our Lemon & Basil Roasted Chicken recipe for a match made in heaven.

£6.39 75cl

NEW BOOTHS CHIANTI RISERVA

(Tuscany, Italy)

The Baroncini family have grown grapes at their historic San Gimignano estate in Tuscany since 1489. Today this dynamic and respected family-owned company, headed up by Bruna Baroncini, comprises of 5 estates which are an excellent source of modern, authentic classics from ‘middle Italy’.

Made from 100% Sangiovese grapes, grown on chalk and Pliocene (soil that is millions of years old), at an altitude of 300 metres above sea level which means the grapes develop more complexity and flavour, this is a great wine to have with stews like our recipe for Minty Lamb Cobbler or my favourite – a large chunk of mature Parmigiano-Reggiano (aka Parmesan).

£6.99 75c

Line caught, straight from the cold, clear waters of Norway’s beautiful Lofoten islands, Skrei is a much loved, premium Norwegian delicacy. Only available between January and April each year, Skrei is a migratory cod, which journeys thousands of miles annually from the Barents Sea to the Lofoten Islands in northern Norway to reproduce. Thanks to this epic journey through icy, dark waters, Skrei has a lean, bright white firm flesh and is rich in protein, vitamins and minerals, which makes it a hugely versatile, healthy and wholesome food.

Fishing is a way of life for the Norwegian community, with the Skrei harvest an annual celebration amongst the generations. The coastline of the Lofoten Islands – where most of the Skrei fishing takes place – comes alive each year with the buzz of excitement that the Skrei season brings. Only the very best of the Norwegian cod catch that meet stringent quality standards will be labelled as Skrei, however no fish that are caught are wasted; an exemplary example of the Norwegian fisheries management system – Norway banned discards 25 years ago. The majority of Skrei are caught with long-lines from small 10-15m vessels. This ensures the quality of the fish is kept in the finest of conditions.Norwegian fishing is a perfect example of man working closely with the environment - all Norwegian cod and haddock is MSC certified and the Barents Sea provides Norwegians with the largest growing cod stock in the world. Careful fisheries management ensures that only 10% of Skrei fish are caught each year.

SKREI® has already received high-end acclaim from top chefs, including Mitch Tonks and Michel Roux Jnr, who have both tried and loved Skrei, with Michel Roux Jnr featuring this hero-fish on the menu for the last two years. Skrei loins are perfectly firm, with obvious fat lines defining the large white flakes, which melt away during cooking. Delicious in a ceviche; firm textured and sweet, or try just lightly curing it and thinly slicing to serve with olive oil, lemon, dill and sea salt – a mouthwatering starter. For a main course, why not try brining some of the loin, then roasting and serving with a little braised fennel and anchovy. With such a delicate, yet full flavour to the meat, the fish can be served simply, with nothing more. After just a short time in the oven, the muscle and fat between the flakes will melt away and can just push each one off with your fork. For a more traditional approach, serve Skrei simply with boiled potatoes and steamed carrots – letting all the flavours of the fish do the talking.
