A South Lakes hotel has bought one of only two bottles of a very rare single malt whisky that were put on sale at Booths’ Windermere store.

Only 110 bottles of the £400 Glenfarclas single malt limited edition whisky were produced by the traditional family-owned distillery in Ballindalloch, Scotland and Booths is the only retailer in the UK to stock it.

Alan Mumford, the owner of The Applegarth Hotel in Windermere, who comes from Edinburgh, said: “We’ve started a malt whisky collection at the hotel and the 1961 Glenfarclas Single Malt will be the centrepiece of the collection. Whisky has become more popular with our guests in recent years as an after dinner drink, including tourists holidaying in the Lakes and people celebrating a special occasion.”

Richard Sykes, the manager of Booths’ Windermere store said: “It’s very difficult for anyone to get their hands on this whisky.  The 50-year-old malt isn’t even available to buy from the distillery, so we were very excited to be able to add two bottles to our range of whiskies.

“We’ve had a lot of interest from whisky lovers since the local media first mentioned that we had these bottles in store.  I’m pleased that one of the bottles is going to a hotel just down the road from the store because it will give more people the chance to try it.  Perhaps one of them will decide to really splash out and buy the second bottle!”

Glenfarclas whisky has been produced by the Grant family in Speyside for six generations. Each individual vintage remains in its original single cask until bottling which ensures the natural colour, taste and strength remains the same.

The 50-year-old malt is noted for its deep amber colour and big sweet character. It has an extremely long finish and is regarded as one of the best Glenfarclas ever produced.

Booths boasts an extensive range of 100 different malt and blended whiskies.
