Wine lovers from Cumbria, Cheshire, Lancashire and Yorkshire have helped to raise more than £7,000 for Comic Relief by buying specially selected vintages at Booths.

The family-owned retailer has been offering a selection of eight wines that customers can buy where ten per cent of the sale of those bottles goes to Comic Relief as part of the Wine Relief initiative.

The wines, which range from £4 to £9.18, are of a variety of red and white vintages and came from all parts of the world including Chile, Hungary, France and Spain.

All the money raised from the sales of the wines will be used to help vulnerable people across Africa and also in the UK. Booths’ wine buyer, who selected the wines, said: “It has been fantastic that so many people have chosen to try the specially selected vintages as part of Wine Relief.

“I hope that people have enjoyed the wines we chose and have been able to do so knowing that they have contributed to improving the lives of vulnerable people both here in the UK and in Africa.”

Wine Relief was introduced in 1999 and proved such a success it has been a part of Comic Relief ever since.
Red Nose Day is a UK-wide fundraising event organised by Comic Relief every two years.

It was launched live on BBC ONE on Christmas Day 1985 from a refugee camp in Sudan. The charity began with a few live events and the first Red Nose Day was broadcast three years later in 1988. Since then there have been eight Red Nose Days that have raised more than £250 million. Red Nose Day 2001 raised £55 million alone.
