Citizens of Soil

Citizens of Soil have a show-stopping range of extra virgin olive oils, grounded in purpose and produced by women who are regenerating their land.

While working in sustainability, Sarah and her husband Michael started a ‘side hustle’ to gain a more fair share for their family friends who were making a small-batch extra virgin olive oil in Greece. Sarah went on to become and olive oil sommelier and recognized issues in the olive oil industry while working across the Mediterranean.

Founder of Citizens of Soil and sommelier Sarah says,

Our mission is to turn a commodity into a community and our community begins with the farmers. We pay our producers above market prices, and directly into their pockets. This way grove owners can focus on the quality of the oil and continue to implement regenerative farming techniques to preserve biodiversity and soil quality into a region on the frontlines of the climate crisis. Our transparent supply chain means we can trace where every drop comes from and that our farmers are paid fairly for the quality.

The brand work with female farmers who are practicing regenerative agriculture, meaning that they’re farming organically and working to build biodiversity and resilience into the land. Their aim through working with female farmers is to help give recognition to the women in the olive oil industry.

Sarah states,

women across the Mediterranean have ALWAYS been a part of olive oil production and the promotion of it across the world. And yet, when you look at the faces behind many of the brands—they’re not represented.

Sarah continues,

As a business, we’re a certified B Corporation, using business as a force for good. We’re also a 1% for the Planet member with our 2023 donations representing 1% of our total sales split between the Sustainable Soils Alliance, the Soil Association, and Kiss The Ground who all focus on regenerative farming.
