Nigel Rides L’Etape du Tour For Cure Leukaemia

Written on July 3rd, 2024

On 6th July 2024, our MD Nigel is taking on the one-day L’Etape du Tour de France, 138km with a leg-shredding 4,591 meters of ascent (Ben Nevis stands at 1,345m with Everest at 8,849m) in aid of Cure Leukaemia.

Nigel says,

Once again this year Booths are supporting Cure Leukaemia, the charity committed to finding cures for blood cancers.

Our association with Cure Leukaemia started back in 2021 when I rode the 2,500 mile 2021 Tour de France route. Since then we have built a lasting legacy which has culminated in the creation of a dedicated specialist cancer research nurse position at Blackpool Teaching Hospital.

Last year Denise Bennett was appointed into that role and has been making a hugely positive impact on the lives of blood cancer patients and their families.

All of the funds we raise at Booths for Cure Leukaemia now goes to fund this vital role. We have raised over £250,000 for Cure Leukaemia since 2021.

This year so far, 14 of our colleagues rode the London 2 Paris route raising over £30k; we are selling bread, biscuits and cakes where a donation is made on the sale of each one; we are collecting at tills in Booths stores via the Pennies collection system for 6 weeks and there is much much more including book table donations, themed fundraising days, in-store cyclo-thons. There are many more events to come later in the year.

For my part I will be taking on 2 challenges. On July 6th I will ride the one-day Etape du Tour de France, 138km with a leg-shredding 4,591 meters of ascent (Ben Nevis stands at 1,345m with Everest at 8,849m). Following that I then face my sporting nemesis, running !! In October, along with my daughter and her partner, I will ‘run’ the Manchester Half Marathon…. as I’ve said before I would prefer to cycle back to the start at the end of the Etape than ‘run‘ for 13 miles.

I would like to personally thank all those who have supported us so far (there are too many to mention here but you know who you are). Equally I would like to encourage others to support going forwards.

We plan to continue to support Cure Leukaemia, Denise and Blackpool Hospital for a good while yet and so there will be many event opportunities to get involved in.

For now, on a very personal note, if you are minded and have the opportunity to support my 2024 endeavours then please visit my just giving page by tapping here.

Thanks in advance for any support you may be able to offer.
