Beer can planters craft

Recycle old beer cans to use as a plant pot for your favourite succulents, it makes a great gift for dad!

In need of some Father’s Day gift ideas?

Why not get crafty and create a playful plant pot using your favourite cans. Gift to use as desk décor, update dad’s potted plant display or gift to grandad as a nod to his favourite beer.

To make these beer can planters, just follow the steps below:

Please note that this craft does involve some sharp edges, therefore we do not recommend it for children.

  • Step 1: Take an empty beer can and carefully use a tin opener to take off the top. It’s important to avoid cutting yourself on any sharp edges of the can so we’d recommend holding it from the bottom whilst you take the top off.
  • Step 2: Once you’ve gone all the way round with the tin opener, use the existing pull tab on the can to take the whole top off and carefully dispose of it in the recycling, avoiding touching the sharp edge.
  • Step 3: Now wash out your beer can, making sure there is no residue left.

The next steps will vary depending on if you have chosen to use a live succulent or an artificial one.

Follow these steps if you are planting a live succulent:

  • Step 4: Use a sharp pair of scissors to carefully poke some small drainage holes in the bottom of your can, this is especially important for succulents as they are used to dry environments so need opportunity to drain in between waterings.
  • Steps 5: Fill your can with succulent compost, leaving around an inch of space at the top to ensure the roots of your plant have enough room.
  • Step 6: You can then plant your succulent as normal, making sure the roots are properly buried and then add a layer of compost to finish off.

Follow these steps if you are planting an artificial plant:

  • Step 4: Fill your can with compost, leaving around 1.5cm of space at the top.
  • Step 5: Place your artificial plant in the soil making sure the bottom is fully covered. For a more realistic look, you can also add a layer on compost for a finishing touch.
