Meet our new pumpkin producer
Located just outside Thirsk, Tom Spilman grows a wide range of pumpkins and squash on the family’s Yorkshire farm alongside his parents, Richard and Sally, and brother, Joss. Established in 1941, the family grow delicious fresh produce and rear quality meat across 700 acres of land. From asparagus to soft fruit, lamb and beef, and of course their incredible pumpkins, The Spilman family are experts in farm to fork produce.
Alongside traditional carving pumpkins such as Harvest Moon and Mars, they grow unusual varieties including Red Warty Thing, Blanco and Munchkin Pumpkins, as well as culinary squash like Crown Prince, Celebration and Spaghetti Squash.
To get them ready in time for autumn traditions, Tom and the team plant their pumpkins in late spring so they can spend the summer growing in the fertile Yorkshire soil. Their bright yellow flowers rely on bees for pollination, before the fruit is left to ripen naturally on the vine. Once ready, each pumpkin is harvested with part of the stalk still attached to help keep it in the best condition. Then they arrive in store ready for you to enjoy!
There’s so many ways to use each variety of pumpkin, from carving them to create a spooky masterpiece for your seasonal decorations, to trying out new recipes with each different part of the fruit. Use the flesh in hearty curry for a warming family dinner, as a porridge topper or wrapped in bacon for a tasty canapé, create brittle or pesto with the seeds, or try out a pumpkin cocktail or sweet fudge, there’s endless possibilities!
You’ll find lots of pumpkin varieties grown for us by Spilmans in store each autumn, along with even more seasonal recipe inspiration so you can make the most out of pumpkin season.
